Early European Explorers reached New Zealand in the 18th century and called the stone greenstone (a literal translation of Pounamu) it was in fact Nephrite Jade.
Found only in the South Island, Jade is a metamorphic stone formed under extreme heat and pressure; it was carried onto lowland areas by glaciers from the last ice age.
Culturally and spiritually Pounamu is a sacred stone, and treasured by the people of New Zealand.
